...and rather auspiciously considering the Skaven releases next month, my 13th post to date!
But as I once more resist the lure of warpstone I've been contemplating how I've spent the last year in the hobby.
I started it at 40k doubles and ended it with a 40k tournament in which I had to work hard to come last without trying to come last. And you guys said i'm uncompetitive! Pah!
In between I've built up my beloved Beastmen army, I've purchased and not built an Ad Mech fleet and I've joined a great gaming club.
One of my favourite events of the year was Snorri's stag do (partly) at Warhammer World, but I've also enjoyed going to the Pennine Pillage and finding a renewedlove for 40k.
Over the last week I've already begun to reconsider the projects for the coming year. Obviously I've gotten in to the idea of my Ad Mech Space Marines and that would go hand in hand with the Ad Mech fleet, so I think that that will be my 40k project.
My latest assemblages are currently being called Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee for obvious reasons:
I've left off the Sarcophogi from Each Ironclad as I'm unsure which ones to use at present, which reminds me, I'm still on the hunt of Ad Mech bits, so please keep looking!
Regards my WFB project however, I'm unsure whether to go ahead with the Dwarfs at this stage. Two of the guys at the club are also starting on their own Dwarf armies, so a third one just seems a bit of a waste. Instead I've been thinking about finally starting my Nordland Empire Army.
So I guess that nothing has really changed, I still flit from one thing to another and still change my mind on a weekly basis and that seems set to continue in to 2011!

Hope you all had a great Christmas!
I know I did! Had a great day with the family and got loads of nice presents. Most were DVDs or clothes, but I got a few bits and pieces of GW stuff too!
Unfortunately due to a few errors, I had to change some of the items, but this is the haul I ended up with:
This little lot ought to keep me going for the year at least! So far i've assembled one of the ironclads and plan to start the second a bit later, then I hope to get the Scouts assembled before new year.
I think I shall keep the Dark Eldar presents, together with the other elements I have for them for a later time so that when I start them, I can start them from scratch.
Well I hope everyone has a great New Year and that 2011 is a good year for them!
for now, may the Emperor Protect!

I had a game at my house!
For most, not a big deal, but i've waited ages since the last time, and the difference now is that i've worked out a way to make the board 6x4! simply adjust an ironing board to the same/similar size as a table! Having this game reduces the average cost per game I host to £27.50! so i'm getting there! :D
I faced Ben's Dark Eldar with the same list as I took to the tournament and the mission was Annihilation with Pitched Battle deployment. After a decent start it became evident that i was going to lose, but i kept chipping away and thanks to a forced re-roll on a Dark Lance shot to a dreadnought I only lost by 7 kill points to 5 which was actually a lot closer than we had both originally thought. I'd had a few unluckily high scatters on some blast markers which could have made the difference!
I'm looking forward to the changes to my list which I will hopefully be able to make after Christmas, and so I shouldn't be too far off a reasonably strong force!

Xmas Bash Tournament 2010
So, I rocked up to both the Fantasy and 40k club tournament last weekend. Unfortunately it was only me that turned up for the Fantasy one, so it was called off, but the 40k one was more popular.
I had three enjoyable games, however once more I retained my Wooden Spoon by losing one game and drawing the next two! Although I wasn't used to the list, it was more that the opponents were all tough cookies! The loss was to Alan and his Space Wolves which, as I expected, tore me a new one, though i did give him a run for his money (at least in my head I did!). The problem was that the game involved squads keeping hold of portable objectives, and although i was allowed to give the objectives to vehicles, i really couldn't see any of my squads surviving combat against these boys! perhaps had I taken an Assault Squad, it may have been different!
the next game was against Ultramarines and the game rules this time was DoW (unlimited Troops deployment) with Kill points with the added problem that all units must take a leadership test at the start of a player turn to do anything! both of us seemed to equal out each others passes and fails and it was a very evenly matched fight ending with 5 kill points a piece!
the last game was against Matt and his Imperial Guard which was Cleanse with spearhead deployment. This was an odd game as we were each heading for the wooden spoon, and whilst we were each playing to win, I was hoping to lose (a title is still a title in my head!) and in the end we were very evenly matched by keeping the other away from our own objectives! this was the toughest fought of the 3 games and definately the most fun!
Anyway, this is the list I took:
and so to the photo you have all been waiting for: Matt and I claiming our prize!

1500 Pts - Space Marines RosterIt did give me a good lesson on how to use the army I took and also highlighted the changes I need to make. I think the bike, as fun as it was, needs to become a Land Speeder for the added versatility, at least one dreadnought is to be an Ironclad and I need some Drop Pods! the only problem with those though are where to place the Master of the Forge!?

A week on Fenris
s I sit here on the last weekday of my week off, in which i have stayed at home every day because a) i'm having a kitchen fitted and b) its too bloody cold to go anywhere, I've not really made that much progress with anything in particular, however I have read A Thousand Sons, and if you haven't, go and do so now!
I've also played a fair bit of Blood Bowl on the computer and managed to avoid tidying up every day.
lastly i've assembled a couple of marine units: an attack bike and some scouts (though these guys aren't yet finished.
The reason i've assembled these guys is because i've been having a play about with a few different marine list and I plan to make some changes to the normal list I field, though that is for another time!

Ponderings on the year to come!
As I shelter from the apparently not quite worst the weather has to throw at us, I'm beginning to think about what I plan to do next year gaming wise. The list is, as always with me, an extensive one, though i must be realistic.
I think it would be nice to work on perhaps four main projects within the whole year, which even then is optimistic, but you need goals afterall!
So then, what four things do I want to work on? Firstly I wouldn't mind getting back to the Dwarfs, so I think they will have to take the first slot. Apart from anything else, I plan to use the Dwarfs for next year's Mighty Empires campaign at the club, so getting on with these will take some pressure off! For 40k, thats a tough one! I think realistically, the most likely candidate is the Lash/oblit army. it is small and compact, plus I'm hoping to use it in the GT (probably Autumn now), so that is slot two! these two will probably be worked upon concurrently, so will likely impede upon each other, so will likely mean I don't have much of next year left by the time that lot is done, so best to stick with smaller projects.
Slot three is an easy choice really: get on with that Ad Mech fleet! If I can get a bit done here and there, i'd hope I will be able to break the back of it by Summer and get the fleet finished by the new year. To do so, I'll break the fleet in to squadrons and work on them as mini battle groups.
for the final slot, i'm unsure which to go for. on the one hand, I like the idea of getting my Carnival of Chaos Mordheim Warband done, but also I've been toying with custon making my own Blood Bowl Team using parts from the other ranges. I think I'll keep this slot open to whatever takes my fancy, but one thing is for sure, I intend to get the Dwarfs to at least 2.5k, the CSMs to the ToS requirement and the Ad Mech to at least 1k!
But who am I kidding? is any of this actually likely? unlikely!

A quick note requesting help
Right, ive decided that i want to put the best effort in to my models now, but i often struggle to transfer what i read as advice on to what i paint, so i've decided to ask my fellow gamers at the club for tutoring and general assistance.

Blood Bowl: Har Ganeth Blades
I hope you readers are sat down, because for this week’s blog I actually have some pictures of some models I’ve actually been painting!
It is early stages so far, but I present to you the beginnings of my Dark Elf Blood Bowl team, the Har Ganeth Blades!
I'm entering the club's mini league, and whilst I had originally intended to use my Dwarfs, I was unable to find them when I wanted to start painting, but knew where these guys were, so went with them instead. No worries though as I like using them and had gotten pretty good with them on the PC game which essentially follows the majority of the rules!
I'm going for a fairly balanced and safe starting team with a couple of re-rolls and an apothecary to help me with the fact that I have the minimum 11 players in the team. The team itself will be two Witch Elves, 2 Blitzers and the rest linemen. It may take some time for them to get going, but hopefully I’ll prove to be a fairly elite team once they do!
So now I need to halve my team between painting these guys up and getting used to using them again by gaming on the pc!
Exciting times!
Elsewhere this last week, I had an enjoyable game against a new player using the Warriors of Chaos verses his Vampire Counts. In the end, we called it a draw as we ran out of time, but I think it was heading in his direction to be fair. Although I wasn't exactly going for a win, he was a pretty sharp tactician, so with a bit of practice he'll do well with them!

Ere we go, Ere we go, Ere we go
So, I have managed to get hold of Tickets for the 2011 40k doubles tournament, which mean Mart and I shall be taking his Orks!
I honestly can't wait! we were supposed to go this year, but were unable to make it, and i've been dying to use Mart's Orks ever since!
Now the hard part, need to write up a list that we are both happy with that complies with the slightly altered rules this year. As far as I can tell, we each need a troop and an HQ, then we between us must take one elite, one fast and one elite. I can see that causing some problems to the more elite armies! Hopefully for Orks though, we ought to be able to squeeze in whats needed!
oh, and the best bit, I don't even need to look at a paint brush for this tournament!!!!
more later!

Nasty Lash and other ponderings
Well, I think that I have found a GT list, and quite by accident to boot! Mart had asked me to field a dual Lash list with plenty of Obliterators so that he could test out his Kan list against something he would struggle against, and boy did he struggle!
I had hoped to use the game to prove to him that a dual Lash/Obliterator army wasn't strong, though it did become apparent very early on that that was not the case.
In fairness, it may be a strong list, but it seems very fragile too, and had a few of the dice rolls gone in Mart's favour instead of mine and the end result would have been very different.
To his credit, Mart battled onwards to the end, and I pushed him as hard as I could, which was strange as we normally have a very relaxed attitude to gaming, but he needed to know how much he could come back by the end of the game, and so I didn't let up and allowed him no mercy, and in the end, he still lost by a fair margin, but not by as much as it would have been had the game finished a turn earlier.
Plus his army was prettier than mine.
But anyway, I think I’ll use this list at the next GT – it may struggle against certain opponents, but it puts the fear of the Chaos Gods in to them too!
The list is:
Whilst writing, I suppose that I ought to say something about the Hull's Angels Welcome Home Tournament I attended last week. It was a two-day Tournament with WFB on the Saturday and 40k on the Sunday. Each day had three games. In essence, I thoroughly embarrassed myself with my results! What was supposed to be a strong WoC list only won a single game, and my super hitty Lord didn't seem to want to hit anyone!
The Dark Angels list was a lot more of a balanced (read: poor) list, and didn't win a single game. One of those losses was against an 11 year old. Laugh it up, everyone else is!
Despite this I had an enjoyable time, and particularly enjoyed gaming against John on the Saturday and Jim on the Sunday!
Sam and Ben did much better however, with Ben winning the WFB Tournament and Sam winning best painted army for his Dwarfs in the WFB tournament and then winning the 40k Tournament.
I'm looking forward to their next tournament; I have a wooden spoon to defend!
In the next few days, I hope to draw together the newest additions of my Warriors of Chaos army which I hope Louise shall be painting up for me in the near future in preparation to get them to at least 3,000 pts for the 2011 Battlefields!
Oh, and finally, back to Mart and his Orks; if you haven’t seen his army yet, check out his Blog!

Where you at Drax?
Well it has been months since the previous entry, and frankly that is because I haven't painted anything, let alone an Ad Mech fleet! For this reason, I have decided to make this a more rounded blog rather than a painting progress blog.
So what have I been up to since my last post? Well, although there hasn't been much in the way of painting, I’ve certainly not been idle on the modelling front! With the arrival of 8th edition, I have had to drastically alter my Beastmen army to work under the new rules. The standard size that i have worked to is 2,400, although I can fairly easily increase this to at least 2,500 and in all likelihood, 3,000. The reason for the unusual points size is because that has become our group's norm. It is a nice round number which divides easily for the purposes of the percentage system, whilst at the same time isn't so large an army that it takes too long to play, but is still big enough to allow some good options. I shall go further in to what they army now consists of at a later date.
Still on the WFB front, I've also done a bit of tweaking to the Stormkrow tribe. They now have Chaos Warriors rather than just Marauders and Chaos Knights. I've also added the now obligatory Battle Standard and Kalaghar has deemed his tribe worthy of his presence, though he has so far been little short of embarrassing!
Other than this, I've added units to my Dark Angels army for a very good Apoc battle, which took place at Warhammer World, which was to celebrate the stag do for my good friend Sam Dowd.
I also took part in the Hull's Angels Welcome Home Tournament this weekend just gone and I had a great time both taking part and also meeting a fantastic bunch of people, but more on that story later!

BFG: Adeptus Mechanicus Fleet
For my first project, I aim to get my Ad Mech fleet fully painted.
the fleet itself will be 1,500 points, and i already have all the parts i need for it, so there are no excuses!
the list itself is as follows:

1500 Pts - Adeptus Mechanicus FleetGiven that the techniques required are fairly simple, and that I don't need to be Golden Daemon standard to avoid it looking rubbish, i may use this as an opportunity to try out my airbrush!

Tales of Grandeur and Woe - Butchered!
Since Ancient seems reluctant to tell this tale, i shall tell it - since this is my first entry on this board, i may as well make it one of the worst luck possible!
My Beastmen were facing Ancient's freshly completed Ogre Kingdoms army - as agreed we had used the House Ruling for this battle.
despite getting the plus 1 for first turn, Ancient won the dice roll and elected to go first!
come his first magic phase, he cast Braingobbler on my Minotaurs! being unsure what else to expect from a maxed out Butcher army i choose to risk the ensuing Panic test, especially as the casting was on an 11!
no worries, the minos were next to my general, Malagor, so surely I could manage an 8? wrong! 9! off they ran, back off the end of the table like prissy little girls! this was going to end badly!
next up, Ancient's second Butcher went to cast Braingobbler on another unit - i already had 3 dispel dice in hand, but no need! Ancient rolled a double one! on the miscast table he then rolls a 3, meaning the Butcher suffered d3 wounds, which of course then rolled a 6 meaning 3 wounds were taken and the Butcher was dead!
oh well, no worries, the butcher balances up the Minotaur I suppose, mused Ancient.
the next roll by his Slaughter master also incredibly rolled another double one! this time, a 1 is rolled on the miscast killing the Slaughtermaster outright , causing 3 wounds to his unit, and d3 wounds to all remaining butchers, all of which, unbeleivably rolled a 5 or 6 killing them!
never mind Ancient, after that, I was in total shock!

Old Battle reports - Gaming day 27th March 2010
For those that don't know, I used to run a small forum for a few friends. I've recently taken the decision to close the forum down but didn't wish to lose all my old info. As such some of it will be posted on this blog.
The 27th March saw the first day of what is becoming an annual gaming event.
On the Saturday, four armies of Chaos clashed to determine who would be the Chaos Gods' champion and lead their armies to take on the valiant Dwarf alliance.
because they were ready first, Ancient and Snorri had a warm up battle between Snorri's mounted Warriors and Ancient's Beastmen
Once the armies were ready, the Combatants lined up their forces for team photos!
Unfortunately Greg the Giant didn't bother to turn up for the team photo, and he was the one with the kit, hence the unpainted army! ;)
Drax's Beastmen:
Ancient's Nurgle Warriors:
Snorri's mounted Warriors:
lucifer's Warriors:
The first battle saw lucifer's Warriors face off against Ancient's Nurgle warband.
the result was a resounding win for lucifer who along with a fair amount of luck (including most of that of Ancient's!) displayed a great amount of skill, especially considering that this was his first bout with the army!
on the other table, my Beastmen faced Snorri's Mounted Warriors.
i hadn't expected much out of this game to be perfectly honest, not least as this too was my first time with the force, however despite a well deserved victory for Snorri, i felt confident i knew what needed amending and was ready for my next match.
and this is where it all fell apart. the beers were out and so the photography came a second place - well, 5th actually: gaming, beer, toilet breaks, food, photography. and in practice, we could only really cope with remembering the first four!
the results of the next game were that Snorri faced lucifer with lucifer winning whilst i faced Ancient and Ancient won. my tweaking obviously hadn't been perfect, but more went my way, so i was on the right path. the battle was a bloody one!
in the third and final game of the day, Snorri and Ancient faced off with Snorri winning.
that result meant that if lucifer beat me, we would have a neat and easy hierarchy.
however, i wasn't going easy. i was after first blood and had spent two games intentionally losing so that i could pounce on which ever fool i faced last and as such i managed to gain my first victory.
this meant that Snorri and lucifer were drawing for first place with Ancient and i were left in joint last. in order to break the hierarchy, we had a wizards duel with ancient and i facing off each other and snorri and lucifer against each other
